Khao Yai Thiang: a guide to Sikhio's wind turbine viewpoint

How to reach Sikhio's wind turbine viewpoint, the best time to go, what to bring, and where to stay nearby.

Khao Yai Thiang is a ridge viewpoint in Sikhio District, Nakhon Ratchasima (Korat). A long line of wind turbines runs along the top of the ridge, and below it Lam Takhong reservoir spreads out across the valley. If you stay at ChanNgarm Mountain View Resort, it is close enough to feel like your own backyard viewpoint: about 15–18 min by car.

This guide answers what our guests ask most before they go: how to get there, when to go, what to bring, and how to fit Khao Yai Thiang into a relaxed day around Sikhio that ends back on the hill.

Where is Khao Yai Thiang?

Khao Yai Thiang is in Sikhio District, close to Lam Takhong reservoir. It is not inside Khao Yai National Park or in Pak Chong, which surprises many visitors because of the name. Coming from Bangkok, Khao Yai Thiang and ChanNgarm are on the same route: Highway 2 (Mittraphap Road) past Saraburi and Pak Chong to Sikhio. You can stop at the viewpoint before you check in, or save it for the evening once your bags are in the room.

Getting there from ChanNgarm

By car (easiest). About 15–18 min from the resort. Ask the front desk before you set off; the team will point you to the simplest route that day.

Without a car. We don't run a shuttle. If you arrive by train or bus, plan a local taxi in advance, or rent a car in Korat city or Pak Chong, where rental companies operate. Tell us when you would like to go and we can suggest how to get around locally.

When to go

Late afternoon is the time we recommend most. The light softens, the sky starts to change colour, and the turbines make strong silhouettes for photos. It is cooler than midday, and you are back on your balcony by dusk.

Early morning suits anyone who wants a quiet start and a cool breeze on the ridge before breakfast at the resort (served 07:00–10:00).

In the rainy season and between seasons low cloud and mist often sit on the hills around Sikhio. Some days that makes for a moody, unusual view; other days the mist hides everything. Check the forecast and keep a plan B.

What to bring

  • A light jacket: the wind on the ridge is usually stronger than in the valley.
  • A hat, sunscreen and water.
  • A fully charged phone for maps and photos.
  • Opening times and any entry fee can change with the season, so ask at the front desk before you go.

A day around Sikhio with Khao Yai Thiang

Plan 1: an easy Sunday. This is the half-day outing we suggest most often.

  1. 07:00 Forest bathing in the woods around the resort: a slow walk with a host, using all five senses.
  2. 10:00 Drive to Khao Yai Thiang viewpoint (15–18 min).
  3. 12:30 Lunch of Pad Mi Korat, the local stir-fried rice noodles, in Sikhio town.
  4. 15:00 Carry on to the cafés and farms of Pak Chong, or come back for a swim in the Sky Pool (open 07:00–20:00).

Plan 2: save the turbines for sunset.

  1. Morning: walk the 2 km Khao Chan Ngam nature trail (45–60 min, Easy to moderate; best at 06:00–08:00 · 16:30–18:00).
  2. Late morning: visit the prehistoric rock paintings, 3,000 to 4,000 years old, 890 m from the resort. Dress modestly, as the path passes through temple grounds.
  3. Afternoon: rest in your room, or join a natural dyeing workshop using hematite, the red iron-rich earth of the area (we can book it for you).
  4. Evening: drive up to Khao Yai Thiang for the last light on the turbines, then back to your balcony.
